Eugenia caryophyllata has a penetrating sweet and spicy aroma. The volatile oil is extracted by steam distillation from the cloves. This base note is warming and stimulating to the body. Clove essential oil is well known for its highly antiseptic, anesthetic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and analgesic properties. Clove oil is an excellent insect repellent, especially when combined with lemon and eucalyptus oils. Clove blends well with most citrus oils, other spices and Ylang Ylang. Clove oil should be used in moderate amounts as one of its chief constituents, eugenol, may irritate the mucous membranes.
