Mentha spicata has a sweet, minty, warm aroma.  The essential oil is obtained via steam distillation from the fresh aerial part of the plant and is indicated for all sorts of respiratory problems, including chronic bronchitis.  When inhaled, it has a wonderful ability to create a feeling of joy and happiness.  This makes it an excellent choice for adding to blends designed for stress relief and nervous tension.  Spearmint bends well with basil, bergamot, grapefruit, lavender, rosemary and sandalwood.  It is a more subtle oil than peppermint, but can be used for similar fragrance and therapeutic applications.  In rare cases exposure to Spearmint may cause allergic reactions, otherwise there are no reports of contraindications or side effects when used properly.
