Thymus vulgaris has a sweet, refreshing, stimulating, herbaceous scent with warming and purifying properties. It is obtained via steam distillation of the fresh aerial parts of the plant.  The colour of the oil i.e. red vs. white results from the vessel used for the distillation.  Thyme blends well with peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, cypress and mandarin.  It is a potent antiseptic with many uses. Externally it is used as an ointment for inflammations of the upper respiratory tract, rheumatic pain and skin conditions such as staph infections, and acne.  Exposure to Thyme should be avoided during pregnancy and when lactating.  There are no reports of contraindications or side effects when used properly.
