Due to its antiseptic properties, Hyssopus officinalis is often used externally as a poultice for bruises and as a wash for minor skin inflammations and wounds.  It is also used to aid in relieving respiratory symptoms of the common cold, and in cosmetics and perfumery.  It has a purifying scent that smells fresh, earthy, woody and slightly sweet. and is considered a multipurpose essential oil by many practitioners.  Hyssop blends well with bergamot and other citrus oils, clary sage, eucalyptus, helichrysum, lavender, myrtle, rosemary, sage and thyme.  There are no reports of contraindications or side effects when used properly however it is best avoided during pregnancy and when lactating, and it should not be used internally.
